And there’s nature and greenery everywhere. Some people complain about the humidity but I haven’t found it too bad, certainly nothing as bad as Texas summers. But the payoff is spring, summer, and fall. You’ll spend a fair amount in the first couple winters just buying winter necessities (good snow boots, socks, thermal undies, scarves, coats, hats, gloves, snow shovel, salt, etc) but once you start to amass the items it gets better, and Amazon will deliver through snow storms (bless them). The second year you realize you’re stuck indoors because of the very real threat of frostbite, and after the third or fourth time you shovel the driveway so you can escape your four walls, you start to go a little bonkers. You can say you like the cold and the snow, and for the first year it’s wonderful and fun and new. My husband and I moved up here to the twin cities in 2016 from the DFW area, where I was born and raised, so it’s a move I have experience with! Honestly it’s pretty great, but we haven’t picked up a winter hobby so that might drive us back out. People are not as materialistic nor do they judge as harshly based on class like I've seen elsewhere. I love that working class people get affordable healthcare and that I'm not an oddball by having had my first child in my early 20s instead of my early 30s. I love that people here value hard work and are willing to lend a helping hand as long as they see you trying your best. You're from Texas, so the religious thing might not phase you. The other things that I find different: people are taller, they take their Norwegian culture seriously (despite maybe also being half Polish or German), people really do drive on lakes without having heart attacks, there is this weird "lake culture" thing, and they are much much more religious than I've ever experienced. It is like casseroles the rest of the country might have eaten in the 50s and frankly, at least for me, I'd rather eat pretty much anything else. At least where I live, the teacher pay is not great, but that is relative to where I came from where a teacher after a few decades might be approaching 6 figures. I pass by at least 3 anti-abortion billboards just on my way to pick up groceries. Minnesota outside of the Twin Cities area is generally right leaning. #10 - Follow Site-Wide Rules & Reddiquette: While we are less likely to enforce every reddiquette rule, we highly encourage everyone to familiarize themselves with both site-wide rules and reddiquette. #9 - Duplicates / Reposts: When submitting new content, please be sure it hasn't already been posted before or a long enough period has passed before reposting.
